American River Rafting - California's Sierra Nevada mountains are one of nature's finest masterpieces and excellent locations for whitewater rafting in California. In the spring, when the foothills are carpeted with a rainbow of wildflowers, the snow pack of the high country begins to melt, providing excellent flows for whitewater rafting California through the summer. California white water rafting is a wonderful way to enjoy all that this beautiful region has to offer. American River Recreation has been leading California white water rafting trips in the Sierra for over two and a half decades.

The Empire Mine is the site of the oldest, largest, and richest gold mine in California. From 1850 to its closing in 1956, it produced 5.8 million ounces of gold. This 5.8 million ounces of gold would fill a box 7 feet on each side. It is estimated that this represented only 20% of the available gold...80% remains. The Park contains many of the original mine buildings, the owners cottage and the restored gardens and grounds as well as the entrance to 367 miles of abandoned and flooded shafts and tunnels. The park consists of 845 acres of forested back country and 12 miles of trails for hikers, bikers and horseback riders.

The site where it all began along the American River in 1848. About seventy percent of Coloma is included in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. The tree-lined streets of the park are quiet throughout much of the year. Most visitors come during the summer or for the many special events throughout the year (many events are listed in our calendar throughout the year). Every January is the annual commemoration of the gold discovery.
The park features include a number of buildings that have survived from the gold rush, a replica of Sutter's Mill, trails and picnic areas. The Gold Discovery Museum features gold-rush-era exhibits including mining equipment and other memorabilia.
